Helpful Hints –Making the Most of Your Walk Contribution

Matching Gifts
Many companies have Matching Gift programs that will match your donations, increasing your contritubution to the Walk. Ask your employer or your H.R. department for details.

Collect Walk Pledges
Ask people to sponsor you with a Walk donation. There is no minimum Walk pledge required. All checks must be made payable to "Support Connection."

Hold a Fundraiser
Organize a fun and easy fundraiser and donate the proceeds to the Walk. Some ideas – a “dress-down day” at your office - a cookie sale - a yard sale. Involve family, friends, children, neighbors. For more fundraising tips, here’s a story from an experienced Team Captain:

The First Three Letters of Fundraising Are... FUN!
By Cathy Grossi

The first three letters of fundraising are…FUN! My theory is if you aren’t having fun you shouldn’t be doing it! I surround myself with people who have the same kind of passion that I have. They need to be people who don’t mind a little hard work. They all have strengths and talents that contribute to the success of our events. Someone likes to cook, someone likes to build, someone likes to organize funds, and you get the idea. I also utilize local high school students. In Mahopac, they all need community service to graduate from high school. It is a great resource!

Each year I host a tent event in my backyard. It has been wine and cheese and last year it was dessert and appetizers! I use it as a kick-off for Support-A-Walk. I print flyers and send them around town. I do electronic distribution of the same flyers. I include information for those who want to make a donation and can’t join us. We have a raffle, we register for the Walk, we sit back, we laugh, we have a great time, and this past year we raised over $2000 that night!  During the course of the year I have ice cream events, tag sales, bake sales, jewelry sales - anything to have fun and make money. If you are having fun, the rest of it comes naturally.

Form a Team

Walk Together to Make A Difference
You can form a team of 2 to 200! It is rewarding to gather family, friends, or others you know to form a team to help make a difference in the lives of people affected by breast and ovarian cancer. The spirit of the day is to raise awareness while we celebrate and pay tribute to the lives of loved ones.

Choose a Team Name
Choose a team name that reflects the spirit of your team – for example: “Miles and Smiles for Andrea,” “Kim’s Krew,” “Carole’s Lucky Charms.” Let your imagination fly!

Distribute Walk Brochures to Team Members
Pick up Walk brochures at Support Connection’s office at 360 Underhill Ave., Yorktown Heights, or call 914-962-6402. Or, tell your team members to register and donate online. Remind them to fill in the name of your team and YOUR name as Team Captain

Ask Team Members to Collect Walk Pledges
Remember: Someone can be part of your team even if they can’t make the Walk. They can still promote the Walk, collect pledges and donate
